Memories have a certain magic to them! Some memories never fail to make you smile, no matter what you are going through at the time, who is with you, or how busy you are. Summer vacations spent with my grandparents, siblings, and cousins are among them.
A huge Rangoon creeper adorned the porch of my grandparents’ home. The sweet scent of the pink and white flowers fascinated me so much that I can feel the scent around me whenever I think of them. My grandparents ensured that all their thirteen grandchildren spent at least a week of the summer holidays as one big family.
The food was festive. My grandma cooked delicious food and always ensured that each one of us ate well. There were no gadgets except for one television in the living room. But we never felt bored or dull for even a moment. We made up games with our own set of rules and had a blast playing those. Sitting under the shade of the Rangoon creeper, we were thrilled to share the crazy things we did in our schools. I wrote assignments for my younger cousins, mimicking their handwriting to avoid being caught by their teachers.
My grandparents have gone to the great beyond but have left precious memories to cherish. A call or a meeting with my siblings and cousins never ends without reminiscing about those holidays. Now I can actually smell the Rangoon creeper!
